Esophageal Reflux Testing

Esophageal Reflux Testing

We offer a variety of reflux testing, including a pH-sensing wireless capsule that is placed into the esophagus during endoscopy or catheter-based pH testing that does not require endoscopy. Your doctor will talk to you about which test may be best for you.

pH-Sensing Wireless Capsule is a diagnostic tool used to determine if a patient has gastroesophageal reflux disease, or to determine if a patient’s reflux therapy is adequately managing their disease. It is placed during an upper GI endoscopy and is typically clipped onto the superficial lining of the esophagus for 48 hours. It then falls off and is passed in the GI tract. This capsule transmits information including acid reflux events, symptom correlation, and pH for analysis by your doctor.

Catheter-based pH testing is done by placing a catheter through the nose and into the stomach. This is typically a 24-hour test, so patients keep this catheter in place for one day after it is placed. Patients are then instructed to track their reflux symptoms. The catheter will transmit pH information for analysis by your doctor. Your doctor will use this information to determine if you have gastroesophageal reflux disease, the severity of disease or to determine if your disease is adequately controlled.
